A Day in the Life of a Petroleum Geologist

Last week, Roxanna was excited to host a “Day in the Life of a Petroleum Geologist” through the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas at Austin.

Undergraduates came to the Roxanna offices (on their day off) to spend the day as a Roxanna Geologist. After a quick introduction, the students were split into groups to shadow several of our geologists.

After lunch, the students did a little lab work including finding oil shows in core samples and log interpretation.

The day ended with our President, Julie Garvin, speaking about what employers will be looking for in them during the hiring process.

Finally, Ben Smith, a UT alumni himself, to talk about his undergraduate experience at UT and his internship last year at the company.

The next day we received a very nice note from Chelsea Ochoa, UT Career Services Program Coordinator. Here’s an excerpt.

It was truly a special day and the students were thrilled to get an inside look at your company. I am very appreciative of the time and thought you put into planning everything. The hands-on activities were really neat and the presentations had valuable information. It was a great introduction to a career as a petroleum geologist.

Not a problem, Chelsea. We look forward to doing it again next year!
