Dr. John T. Smith, Geochemistry Associate
John has twenty-eight years experience with Shell Oil Company as a research scientist and consultant. His expertise is in hydrocarbon source rock and migration concepts as applied to the hydrocarbon potential of depositional basins. John began his career working on the Manhattan Project and later was a professor of chemistry at Rice University. He joined Shell in 1953 as a researcher on rock properties and fluid flow. He was named Manager of Chemistry Department, Shell E&P Research Division in 1958 where he focused on the origin and migration of petroleum, sedimentary diagenesis, rock properties and fluid flow, drilling mud chemistry, sand consolidation and well stimulation and enhanced oil recovery. Prior to retiring in 1981 he spent sixteen years assigned to Head Office Exploration as the geochemical consultant.
As a consultant, John authored the chapter entitled “Petroleum System Logic as an Exploration Tool in a Frontier Setting” in AAPG Memoir 60 (1994) and consultants to the petroleum industry on hydrocarbon geochemistry and related fields.
